Touch-Screen Operated Emergency Vehicle Lighting &
Message Display System

With many emergency and utility vehicles now requiring Intelligent Lighting and Control Systems, NHT Design recently undertook a development to produce an modular Vehicle Lighting (including Light-Bars) and Moving Message Display system for use in environments where flexibility, modularity and reliability were critical requirements.

Key requirements for the design were also:-

  • In-Vehicle Touch-Screen Control with Multi-Lingual Support
  • Fully Configurable via PC Interface for Operation & Maintenance Support
  • Automotive Design Type Approval
  • Compliance for Emergency Vehicle Standards with PITO Approval

The NHT Design Team met the challenge and produced a design that incorporated a TFT Display with touch-screen, a high brightness LED message display and a module to control the lighting units in a light-bar. In addition, a camera (or output from a multiplexed multi-camera system) can be easily displayed.

The system is easy to use and install. The touch-screen operation is intuitive, the camera can be displayed with one touch and the whole system can be controlled by one button-press in an emergency situation. On installation, most connections are made using pre-made cables with additional connections only required in high power situations.

Our Embedded High-Speed Digital Design Team produced a Design Solution in compact timescales with the following hardware features:-

  • Fujitsu 64MHz 32-bit RISC CPU
  • TFT Display 240 x 320 with Touch-Screen
  • Fujitsu Lime Graphics Engine
  • CAN 2.0 Module Communications
  • Camera Support
  • Microchip dsPIC33 Microcontroller
  • Multi-Layer PCB Design

Our Embedded Software Specialists produced a fully configurable, scalable and robust touch-screen interface solution containing:-

  • ANSI C coded interface with support for Lime frame-buffer device
  • Fully configurable interface with bitmap support
  • Support for image capture via camera interface
